LOOKING TO PARTICIPATE?

Looking to participate in a sport that requires skill, fitness, strategic thinking and the desire to play as part of a team? Whichever level you play at, basketball can enhance your life by improving fitness and coordination.

Whether you are looking to participate casually or competitively, you'll find our organization to be a great place to learn new skills and meet new friends.

K-3rd Grade Program

Fridley Hoops provides a fun and safe environment for players to learn the fundamentals of basketball. Each child will play equal time in each game throughout the season, while learning sportsmanship, teamwork and building self-confidence.

Kindergarten through third grade girls and boys who are interested in basketball are welcome to participate. Players from these grades will be divided into three divisions:

  • Kindergarten and 1st Grade Boys and Girls Skills
  • 2nd and 3rd Grade Girls House League
  • 2nd and 3rd Grade Boys House League

What to expect:

Our Kindergarten and 1st grade program focuses on basic fundamentals through fun drills and contests. There is no league play at this level, but players will be involved in various team competitions. Sessions are held Saturdays in January.  Registration is FREE.

Our 2nd and 3rd grade league provides a more traditional game experience with some additional rules that help teams establish and run an offense, and work on man to man defense. Teams will be balanced and fair.

Typically there will be two practices each week with games on Saturdays. Teams at this level will play in a  league with other north metro suburbs. Games will be played typically in one designated location.

  • Girls season runs from mid October through December.
  • Boys season runs from January through mid March.

Registration fee is $95. Parents have the option to volunteer 8 hours at Fridley’s tournaments.

4th - 8th Grade

The Fridley Youth Basketball Association is the only recognized youth basketball club serving the Fridley school district, and our experienced board and coaches ensure a quality program. Programs are intended for boys and girls in 4-8th grades who attend or live in District #14 school district.

Program Basics

  • Tryouts are held in late September and will be conducted for all grades.  Players will be assessed and placed onto a team according to skill and ability.
  • Players will be placed on a traveling or house team based on level of skill and number of players in their grade.
  • Traveling Season is mid October through early March.
  • House League season is shorter:
    • Girls practice and play Oct-Dec
    • Boys practice and play Dec - March
  • Practices are held twice weekly at Fridley school district facilities from 6-10 p.m.
  • Playing Time. Coaches will delegate playing time in a manner that will provide opportunity for both individual player development and overall team success. It should be noted that consideration of playing time for any one particular game may vary depending on game situations and the necessity of maintaining competitive balance. A coach may also consider an individual’s work ethic, attitude, commitment, attendance and disciplinary measures as additional factors determining playing time. Coaches are advised to meet with both the player and parent to define and discuss any “nongame related” situations that would warrant significant reduction in playing time prior to enacting any such measure. A parent may contact the Traveling Director regarding any playing time issues or concerns they are unable to resolve directly with the team’s head coach. As a general rule of thumb, play time in 4 & 5th grade is 50%, 6th grade 45%, 7th grade 40% and 8th grade 35%.
  • Registration fee is $330 - $80 of this fee covers volunteers at our tournaments. This fee pays for for gym rental, tournament or league fees, uniforms - which must be returned and equipment.
    • A portion of registration fees will be refunded to players who are placed on a house team vs. traveling team.
  • Traveling teams will participate in 10 tournaments including our Fridley Hoops home tournaments and grade state.
  • Parents have the option to volunteer eight hours per day or 16 hours per tournament at Fridley’s tournaments. Those who volunteer to work will be paid $10 per hour worked.   Funds raised at our tournaments go towards club expenses and help maintain reasonable registration fees.
  • Additional costs include, but are not limited to, gate fees to get into tournaments (parents/family members) and costs of traveling to and from tournament venues.  Parents are responsible for getting their player to practices and games.
